The show is based on Fire & Blood, a fictional history book by George R.R. Martin that is not written or structured like a typical novel. In order to cover all the relevant events, House of the Dragon Season 1 employed sporadic time-skips that were not universally popular among fans. However, now that the timeline is stabilizing in Season 2, we can start to expand the roster. Eve Best will play dragonrider Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, the wife of Toussaint's Lord Corlys Velaryon. She is defined as "The Queen Who Never Was" because she was "passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council" because "the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male."
Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria
Dany's Targaryen ancestors are at the height of their power and influence, with the only threat coming from the heir issue. With her father serving as Hand to the King, she has spent much of her life in the royal household, during which time she developed a strong friendship with Princess Rhaenyra. However, that bond will be tested in the years to come and as the game of thrones grows more and more brutal, perhaps Alicent has the determination to win it.
Sian Brooke plays Queen Aemma Arryn
She's best known for her role in Marvel's Black Widow, and she hosts a podcast where she highlights non-white Swedish women, called Fenomenala kvinnor (Phenomenal Women). Alicent is the daughter of Hand of the King Otto Hightower, who has grown up in the Red Keep alongside most of the royal family, including her close friend Rhaenyra. Though the girls are besties at the start of the series, the trailer hints that they'll be at odds as adults (probably because of the building connection between Alicent and Viserys).
Paddy Considine as King Viserys I
He was the heir to Driftmark, and was also dragonrider, just like his brother. "Luke", as he was known, rode Arrax, though both met their doom at the hands (and teeth) of Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar, in the series finale. Based on George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood, the first season showed us what the Seven Kingdoms were like when dragons (and their masters) ruled the skies. There, we watched as the Targaryen dynasty began to fracture under the weight of King Viserys' decision to name his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his sole heir.
Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark
Viserys hosts a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. The cast and crew break down everything you need to know before you dive into Season 1. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. Stream all of HBO, plus hit series, movies, reality, and more.

The following main cast members are confirmed for House of the Dragon season 2. Even after the death of King Viserys when he was ordered by Otto Hightower to assassinate Rhaenyra at Dragonstone, Westerling resigned from his post in defiance of the order and the Hightowers' attempted power grab. She later took on the name of the White Worm and formed a spy network, often working for the likes of Otto Hightower and even being instrumental in finding Prince Aegon so he could take the Iron Throne after Viserys' death.
Ulf was a man-at-arms at Dragonstone before the war and was known for being a bit of drunkard. His chance to ride a dragon was seen as an attempt at redemption and glory. Bew will play another dragonseed named Hugh the Hammer, or simply Hugh Hammer. Little is said about Hugh's history or personality in the book, so it will be interesting to see him brought to life in the show.
Harvey Sadler as Young Lucerys Velaryon, and Elliot Grihault as Prince Lucerys Velaryon

However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, House of the Dragon won Best Television Series – Drama and D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama. The series earned nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and won three British Academy Television Craft Awards.
The Russian-born actress has appeared in Banshees, Krypton, and played Xela in Game of Thrones season 5 episode 5, The Bells. The Swedish actress has appeared in the series Partisan and the film Black Widow and has starred in many Swedish television shows including Irene Huss and Hassel. The Australian actor is best known for his roles in the Aussie series Packed to the Rafters and Love Child, along with roles in the films The Wolf Creek, The Water Diviner and Holding the Man. Spokes has appeared in numerous television series, including ITV drama The Ipcress File, Hitmen, Casualty, and Holby City.
House Targaryen is responsible for giving us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and now there is a new lineup of characters emerging, ready to breathe fresh life into the onscreen Game of Thrones universe. Keep reading for our comprehensive rundown of who's playing who in HBO's House of the Dragon – and we'll keep this article updated with every new casting announcement. Without getting into spoilers, the presence of Simon Strong and Alys Rivers, in particular, point to a sequence of events from the source material that unfolds at Harrenhal. There's a reason Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) made mention of Harrenhal when poring over the painted table at Queen Rhaenyra's (Emma D'Arcy) war council in the season 1 finale.

Following the time jump, Laenor is still married to Rhaenyra and stays by her side as they welcome their third child (though he's probably not the father to any of their children). He names the baby Joffrey, after his lover who died at their wedding feast. Like Rhaenyra, he has had his own affairs during the marriage, while still being a supportive husband and father. Playing adult Rhaenyra is D'Arcy, a London-born film and stage actor who is nonbinary and uses gender-neutral pronouns. They've previously appeared in the Prime Video action series Hanna, the British comedy/horror Truth Seekers, and the 2020 film Misbehaviour.
House of the Dragon season one has finished airing, though the first season can now be streamed on HBO Max in the US and Sky TV and streaming service, NOW in the UK. House of the Dragon is Elliot's first major credit; Harvey Salder played the younger version of the character. Queen Alicent Hightower is Otto's daughter and was married to Viserys before his death. Being the daughter of the Hand of the King, she's enjoyed many privileges throughout her life.
